If you hold EU community rights that allow you to work in other member states of the European Economic Area (EEA), then you may be eligible to apply for registration under EU Directive 2005/36/EC.

Language skills for applicants

Under the directive you may apply for registration if you have EU community rights and:

1. Hold a diploma in chiropractic awarded by an EEA member state and you are registered to practice in an EEA member state that recognises that qualification


2. Hold a diploma in chiropractic awarded on completion of regulated education and training in an EEA member state where chiropractic is not regulated and have practised as a chiropractor in an EEA member state for at least 1 out of the last 10 years


3. Have a diploma in chiropractic from outside the EEA

    and either

a) The practice of chiropractic is regulated in that state by a competent authority


b) You have practised in an EEA member state for at least 3 out of the last 10 years.

I’m still not sure if I’m eligible

The rules around the directive are quite complicated. If you need some advice we recommend that you:

  • get in touch with the competent authority or contact point for chiropractic in your member state of origin (where you or your spouse were born)


  • contact the member state in which you are currently practising or in which you formerly qualified or practised to ensure that you meet the requirement of the directive, and that the competent authority is able to issue the documents we need to register you

You may need to take legal advice to find out whether or not you are eligible for registration under the directive. If you think this may apply to you but are not sure, please contact us.

Before you can be registered, we will need to recognise your chiropractic qualification. This is so that we can be sure it is equivalent to a chiropractic qualification obtained within the UK.

As part of this we ask you to map your chiropractic learning and experience against our education standards. So that we can do this we ask that you provide:

  • A completed application form.

  • Proof of nationality – such as a passport or national identity card number

  • Proof of qualification -  a certified copy of your professional chiropractic qualification or other such evidence showing your name, confirmation of the qualification and date achieved

  • A completed skills assessment form mapping your professional education and work experience to our education standards

  • Evidence of any courses other than your main chiropractic qualification and experience you include on the assessment form

  • A certified copy of the academic transcript outlining the results achieved for each module studied

  • A course guideline and/or handbook outlining the modules you studied. Please ensure the course details match those listed on your transcript (see above)

  • certificate of current professional status where you have been practising in an EEA state regulating the practice of chiropractic. The certificate must confirm registration with the appropriate regulatory body and provide confirmation of training standards as well as giving details of any relevant disciplinary actions against you.

What happens following assessment of my chiropractic qualification?

Once an assessment has been done we will get back to you to advise you of the outcome. This will either be to:

  • let you know we have recognised your qualification, in which case you can progress to registration, see below or

  • to ask you to provide further details on specific aspects of the qualification.

If you are asked to provide us with further details we will assess this and may either:

  • recognise your chiropractic qualification, or

  • ask you to undertake an adaption period, or undergo an aptitude test. If this happens we will provide you with full details at that point. 

English language skills

If English is not your first language or you did not graduate with a degree where English was used in the teaching and assessment process, you MUST send us evidence of your ability to speak English.

We normally expect a minimum score of 7 in all areas of the Academic International English Testing System (IELTS) - or the equivalent - for speaking, reading, writing and listening within the last two years. Further details of the evidence you can provide can be found here.

IMPORTANT: Recognition of your qualification does not automatically include registration. You must apply for registration separately.

Am I eligible to apply?

You will be eligible to apply to the General Chiropractic Council’s register if you:

  • have EU community rights
  • have a chiropractic qualification equivalent to an accredited course within the UK.

How will my application be processed?

The first stage is to check your chiropractic qualification is similar to one that we accredit for UK graduates. 

We will then check the documentation you provided to ensure you meet the registration requirements

In addition to those documents sent as part of your qualification check, you must also send us:

  • details of your indemnity (insurance) arrangements, so we can be sure you are covered for practising as a chiropractor in the UK. More information on the requirements for indemnity arrangements for all chiropractors, can be found here.

  • evidence of your English language skills.

  • a medical report from your General Practitioner (GP) or equivalent, which has been written within the 3 months before you apply for registration. You can find further details, along with a pro-forma medical report for your GP here.

  • if you are applying from a country where chiropractic is not regulated, you must provide a police check from the national repository of criminal records. Further details on convictions, cautions and reprimands you may need to declare can be found here.

  • the registration fee. Current fees can be found here.

IMPORTANT: we are not able to guarantee if and when registration will be granted. For this reason we recommend that you do not book any patients until you have received confirmation from us that you have been registered.

When your registration application arrives, we will look at your documents to make sure they meet our requirements. If we need any more information we will email you with details.

Things that may help to speed up your application

We do not offer a 'fast track' application service that allows us to deal with your application ahead of others. However, the following pointers should minimise the time it takes to process your application. 

Please also note that we do not accept visitors to our offices without a prior appointment. Delivering your form personally will not reduce the time it takes us to process your application.

  • ensure your application is filled in correctly before you post it to us

  • check that the documents fit with the requirements we have listed on the application form

  • make sure you provide current contact details and an email address so that we can get in touch with you easily

  • if you are in the process of moving make sure you keep us up to date with any changes to your contact details

  • once registered you will be able to do add your new practice details online if necessary

  • please note: we are required to list an address for you on the register. If you do not provide us with a practice address and telephone number, we will list your home address and telephone number instead

  • make your payment by card or electronic transfer (CHAPS), which will clear our account immediately.

Check your emails (including your ‘junk’ email folder) regularly after you apply for registration as this is our preferred method of contact.

How long will it be before I am registered?

We aim to check your application within 24 hours from its arrival, however this is not always possible and you should allow 2 working days before contacting us.

If any of the following circumstances apply to you, please be aware that it may take longer than usual for you to gain registration:

  • you have a criminal conviction or caution
  • you have a health issue where we need further information
  • you have had disciplinary matters with another regulatory body.

Where there is a possibility that registration may not be granted, the Registrar will make a decision based on the application file, including all documents provided by the applicant and any subsequently obtained by the General Chiropractic Council following an investigation.

Process before the Registrar

Before making a decision, the Registrar must be satisfied that: 

  • sufficient evidence has been obtained to enable a fair decision to be made
  • the applicant has had an opportunity to comment on all documents that form part of the application file.

While most decisions can be made by the Registrar without the need for an interview, exceptional cases may arise where a decision will be taken to interview the applicant.

Explaining and recording decisions

All decisions of the Registrar are recorded with reasons. If the Registrar decides to refuse an application, the applicant will be informed of the process for appealing the decision through the Registration Appeals Committee.

Successful applicants

  • once you have been registered we will email you with your registration number and start date
  • a letter confirming your registration and certificate will follow by post, together with a receipt for your fee
  • we will return any original identity documents, naturalisation papers or certified translations to you by the most secure postal option offered by Royal Mail
  • we will provide you with a website user number to sign up to use the General Chiropractic Council website
  • your name and practice(s) will be added to the General Chiropractic Council register [link to homepage] either on the day of registration, or very shortly after.

Unsuccessful applicants

Should the Registrar refuse someone registration, applicants would normally be aware of this possibility before a decision had been made. This is because we gather as much information as possible before making a decision.

Each application is viewed on its own individual merits and the Registrar carefully considers the information supplied. In most circumstances we ask for more information if we have any queries or concerns about your application. This might include:

  • a health report
  • criminal record documentation, such as a court extract, or a police record check
  • the applicant’s observations, if he or she has been convicted of an offence.

This is not an exhaustive list, but is to give you an idea of what we might ask you for.

If you are refused registration then you will have the right to appeal the decision of the Registrar.
